Pre-Game Notes: Pens vs Capitals

Boudreau, out. Dale Hunter, in. Tomorrow will be Hunter’s second game as the new head coach of the Capitals. The Caps are coming off a 2-1 loss to the St. Louis Blues from last night, while the Pens are also looking to turn around their loss to the Rangers. The Caps have lost their last 3 games (one of which was also to the Rangers in a 6-3 loss). With a losing streak accumulating and acquiring new coach, the Caps have got to start turning things around. Hunter is bringing in a new system to the team, so on top of everything else, they are adjusting to learning a new style of play.

More after the jump…

The Pens will be without Zbynek Michalek and Kris Letang, as they are now in Pittsburgh received additional medical evaluation for injuries incurred on Saturday in Montreal.

Defenseman Mike Green of the Caps is the new Rick DiPietro. Kid can’t catch a break on injuries this season. He has missed the last 9 games with a groin injury. Ironically, he was injured in his first game back from a sprained ankle.

The Caps are desperate for a win. Pens vs Caps games are always interesting. This one will be no exception to that rule.

Alexander Ovechkin has been struggling for quite some time now to prove that he is the player he was drafted to be. He and Sidney Crosby seem to feed off of each other’s energy. They have not played one another since the Winter Classic last January. This media created rivalry though is good for the sport. It is good for the teams.

Simon Despres has apparently been called up from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton for his first NHL game. Alex Picard was sent back. This is an extremely curious decision considering how well Picard has been playing for the Pens this season. No official word from the Pens on this yet.

Also, last time the Pens and Caps met in Pittsburgh, Arron Asham fought Jay Beagle.  Beagle still has not returned to the game. You know some of the Caps are out for blood for their teammate. Wish Beagle well on his road to recovery.

Game should be interesting.

Let’s Go Pens!
